We have many years of experience in sexual health and believe us, we’ve seen the whole lot when it comes to myths about condoms.
Today we are going to be debunking five of the most common myths about condoms:
Myth #1: Condoms take the pleasure out of sex
Not true. Yes, putting a condom on can be tricky, but not having a condom to begin with is a passion killer.
Make putting the condom on part of your foreplay. If your partner doesn’t want to talk about it, or refuses to wear one, it’s important that you put your own health needs first. So always talk about what you want and what will make you feel safe.
Myth #2: Condoms are one size fits all
Not true. Condoms come in all different shapes, size, colours and flavours. You just need to find the one that works for you. FLAME® condoms come with or without dots or ribs with extra lubricant so they help you turn up the heat.
Myth #3: Condoms break easily
Not all condoms are created equally. Buying a condom brand you can trust is important. Trust is in fact a key element to sex.
FLAME® condoms are manufactured to high standards, with high-quality natural materials that are thoroughly tested to give you and your partner the trust you need to make good sex, great.
Now when it comes to condoms breaking, it all comes down to choosing a size that fits you. If it does, it is very unlikely that it will break – unless your partner has sharp nails or jewellery, then that could be a problem.
Myth #4: Two condoms provide double the protection
Not true. People assume that doubling up on condoms will provide double the protection against unwanted pregnancy and STIs. But the truth is, putting two condoms on is not a good thing and can put you at more risk, as two condoms on top of each other create friction and makes them more likely to tear. One is all you really need.
Myth #5: Condoms don’t protect against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
While you can’t rely on condoms 100%, extensive scientific research shows that condoms significantly reduce the risk of getting UTIs and spreading STIs.
If you happen to have contracted a UTI, there are a few things you can do to put your body, and mind, at ease – without ruining your sex life:
- Pee right after sex. This can help flush out any bacteria that got pushed into the urethra and help prevent a UTI.
- Drink plenty of water. The more you drink, the more you pee. Urinating can help flush bacteria out of the urethra.
- Shower before and / or after sex. A quick shower before sex – with or without your partner – might help prevent UTIs by washing away the bacteria ahead of time.
